Social Protection

You will also have to register to the French Social Protection system and apply for a social security number on the dedicated website for students : https://etudiant-etranger.ameli.fr/#/

This number gives you access to the coverage of basic medical expenses when you arrive in France. Please note that this step is compulsory to every student in France.

Exemptions
European citizens:

  • Students are highly advised to obtain an European Health Insurance Card from their home social security body before leaving for their exchange in France.
  • If unable to present the EHI Card, students will be given the corresponding form by the physician. Healthcare will be reimbursed by the local Caisse Primaire d'Assurance Maladie according to the official rates.

In addition to this service, you can also subscribe to a Medical Insurance (Mutuelle) which allows an extended coverage. Additional Medical Insurance is not compulsory but highly recommended.
